Common Ground

As some of you know, I worked for the Bush Administration during my time in Washington. I will let you interpret my political leanings from that bit of information. The current President and myself do not see eye-to-eye on, let's be honest, anything. Until now.

It would seem that POTUS loves him some pie. A senior White House adviser has reported that it is the President's weakness. I'm right there with you, buddy. I love pie so much that I dedicated an entire room to the delicious dessert at my wedding in November.

Pie unites us all in peace and harmony. Okay, maybe not. But at least it unites us in yummy noises and calories.

Maybe the world will be right again. All we need is pie. Preferably pie from The Pantry in McKinney, TX.

Whole songs have been written about pies. My mom reminded me of Andie McDowell's tribute from the movie Michael. My favorite is from the film, Waitress with Kerri Russell. I will sing my little ones to sleep with this song of "strawberry love" one day.

Double Down

Living in Trinidad, West Indies one of the first things that you discover is that this country loves chicken. But more specifically, Trinidad and Tobago love KFC. That's right, the Colonel is in full effect in this southern most Caribbean nation. There is one on nearly every corner and in downtown Port of Spain the highest grossing KFC in the world mightily sits on a crowded street.

You can imagine every one's excitement when just yesterday Kentucky Fried Chicken unveiled their new "Double Down." What could be better than a chicken sandwich, sans bread? Why didn't we think of this before now? This is, after all, the 21st Century is it not?

Watch the T.V. commercial here.

But why stop there? Why shouldn't we have hamburgers made up of a patty, lettuce, pickles, what-have-you, sandwiched between two more patties? The gluten-sensitive community will sing our praises. Finally a sandwich for those tummies who can't process evil breads.

BF made the fine suggestion of a literal "grilled" cheese. One piece of cheese with the branded cross-hatching pattern normally reserved for slabs of meat or even bread. I also like the idea of a chicken fried steak sandwich. Two all-beef chicken fried patties sandwiching some thick cream gravy in the middle. Or the Meatloaf sandwich. Meat can be a loaf just as much as bread can.

Woman's Day posted an article called, "8 Sandwiches with No-Bread Buns" guess I'm not the first one to think of other sandwich options. Check it out though, some of them are pretty hilarious and awful looking.

I'm mailing this idea to the U.S. Patent Office, post haste! Who wants in? I could use some start up money for my all meat, no bread sandwich venture. We can call them "Sansi-Bread Wiches."

Gaye Food

This has been a good week for food in the FOL household. It started off with Monday night not-world-famous enchiladas. So good. But I can't take full credit for them because the recipe is from America's Test Kitchen. ATS is my all time favorite spot for recipes because they tell you what can possibly go wrong and how to prevent it. Enchiladas...drool.

Tuesday night was cocktails at The Gibson. Delicious, yes. Food, no. Thank goodness for jumbo slices from the pizza place down the road. For late night jumbo in Logan Circle head to the pizza joint next door to Source Theater at 14th Street and T.

Last night was birthday night for the BF so I treated him to Marvin Fried Chicken and Waffles. Voted best in D.C. Marvin was named as a tribute to Marvin Gaye who grew up in the Shaw neighborhood. It is a super cool spot next door to the super swank Gibson. Marvin has one of the best roof top decks in D.C. and we had been anxiously waiting for the crowds to die down to check it out. We had also heard about the afore mentioned fried chicken and waffles. BF has had this southern treat at three other Washington eateries and was ready to put Marvin to the taste test.

Not actual dish at Marvin, but from Wikipedia. Didn't want to be the nerd photographing my food.

Success! The fc w/ waffle comes on a bed of collard greens that are out of this world. Based on my past experiences with the wilty green leaves I was none too excited to try them out last night. But hold on to your pants because Marvin does good collard greens. None of that bitter aftertaste that you find elsewhere. This was the real deal, kiddos.

I had the apple bacon mussles served with a toothsome cyclone of "frites." Mama, it was good. Who knew a creature served in its own home could be so finger licking good? Dinner was followed up by an ambrosial apple cheddar pie served with salted caramel icecream.

If you're in D.C. head out to Marvin at the corner of 14th and U Street. Anyone else been anywhere good lately? Anyone try a new unexpected dish this week?
